Side comment:

This was actually what I recall as my main brain-damage when ripping
out the old make and tossing in the automake system. I basically
learnt the hard way a feature which then was definitly not there.

It is with great joy that I have learnt about this step forward and is
thus happy to see this kludge go out of the code, for kludge it was.
